Who or what is remembered?: Canadian soldiers who died

The Oak Bay Cenotaph is located just behind the ocean at Uplands park. It was errected in 1948 to remember 97 persons from Oak Bay who died during their service in the Second World War. The memorials creation is a result of the families of the deceased activism for establishing a place to remember.

Following a competition, the memorial was crafted by Hames Saull, a former airman who moved to Victoria after WW2. The memorial is made of concrete and granite and shows a 9feet tall woman spreading her arms over four prequels with names.√he inscription reads:

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

The memorial was expanded in 2004, adding names of people from Oak Bay who died in World War 1, the Korean War, UN peace keeping missions and missions of the Canadian Merchant Navy. The memorial is a site of remembrance ceremonies on November 11.
